Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results are expected any time from now. A revised crash academic calendar for colleges that reopen on Monday 10th was announced yesterday.

Examination marking is complete and examiners have already left for their homes. The Education Cabinet Secretary Professor Magoha said when the tests ended last month that the results would be announced by the 10th of May 2021.

The Education Ministry has published new directives on the reopening of technical and vocational training and education institutions (Tvets) for face-to-face learning. College students are required to report on Monday.

Technical and Vocational Training PS Margaret Mwakima instructed colleges to ensure all Covid-19 health protocols and guidelines are in order before the opening day.

In a circular to national polytechnics, technical and training institutes, institutes of technology, technical and vocational colleges, and vocational and training centers, PS Mwakima announced a revised academic calendar asking them to complete the second term, which was interrupted by a presidential directive on March 26, that called for the shutdown of schools, colleges, and universities.

Academic year

The institutions closed two weeks before the end of the term. A good number of colleges and universities were about to administer the end-of-term examinations.

“The State Department directs Tvet Institutions to resume face-to-face training from May 10, 2021,” she said.

The remaining few weeks of the interrupted 2020/21 2nd term calendar will continue from May 10 to 21, while term three will start on May 24 and conclude on July 30. The students will then write their national examinations for 4 weeks, starting on August 2.

Practical training

Tvet students will break for 2 days and resume for the 3rd term instead of the 2 weeks programmed earlier. The PS said the 2021/22 academic calendar would be issued in July.

She directed the colleges to give prominence to practical training disciplines when they resume learning adding that they are free to proceed with online programs for “non-hands-on” training in order to comply with social distancing requirements and reduce the risk of Covid-19 infections.

“The Ministry of Education will continue to make spot checks on institutions’ compliance to the coronavirus guidelines.

“Any failure will lead to suspension of operations in the particular institution, including action on the management,” she said.
