121 students and teachers from 9 schools have tested positive for covid-19 in Nakuru County

121 students and teachers from 9 schools have tested positive for covid-19 in Nakuru County. This is according to the County Chief Officer of Health Samuel King’ori. Out of the 121 infected persons, 114 are students while seven are teachers.

All nine schools have been turned into isolation centres by the Health and Education ministries. Movement in and out of the schools have also been restricted.

Further, 212 students who were in contact with sick persons have been quarantined and will be tested for Covid-19 after 14 days. “Though a number of students have tested positive for the virus, they are stable and undergoing treatment at their respective schools,” said Mr King’ori.

A team of surveillance officers has been deployed to the schools to monitor the state of the learners, who are reported to be in good condition with majority of them being asymptomatic.

.“Students in boarding schools will remain in school, while those in day schools have been sent for home based care,” Mr King’ori said adding that sensitisation program targeting teachers, non-teaching staff and learners is ongoing in both public and private schools in the county to boost the war against the virus.

“Learners are trained on the importance of hand-washing and wearing face masks. They are also encouraged to keep social distancing while in schools to break the transmission chain,” said the health official stating that the initiative is to be conducted in all 1,137 (public and private) primary and 520 secondary schools including higher learning institutions.
